Sean Conroy is now in the history books as the first baseball player who is openly gay while playing on a professional baseball team. As a pitcher for the Sonoma Stompers, Conroy pitched a shutout game on Pride Night (25 June 2015) against the Vallejo Admirals.

Stompers President and CEO Eric Gullotta said, “I’m incredibly proud of Sean for taking this monumental step. This is a courageous step he’s taking and we’re humbled that the Stompers are a small part of it.”

As a show of support, Conroy’s teammates wore rainbow armbands and socks at the Stompers Pride Night game. “I’ve always played baseball because it was fun and I loved the sport. Being gay doesn’t change anything about the way I play or interact with teammates,” Conroy said.

The role model stated, “I hope that in leading by example, more LGBT youth will feel confident to pursue their dreams, whatever those dreams may be.”
